WATER RATES & REFUNDS

Post Date:05/17/2018 9:22 AM

Updated as of 05/22/2018 ...

The issuance of the first round of refunds has been initiated. Some customers received their refunds in the mail or on their April billing. The first round of refunds should be completed in May. The second round of refunds will not begin until after the new water rates are approved.

On April 25, 2017, the City was sued over the residential water rate structure. The City and the proponents of the lawsuit have reached a preliminary settlement. A copy of the Settlement Agreement, along with other relevant information, can be viewed under the "Documents" tap below.  The final agreement is consistent with the terms described in the below fact sheet. Although not required by the draft Settlement Agreement, City Council approved refunds to non-residential rate payers at their November 7th, 2017 Special Work Session.

On March 13, 2018, City Council directed staff to Issue additional refunds to any customer who paid greater than the cost to provide service (set by the settlement agreement at $2.76 per thousand gallons) throughout the entire rate period (January 1, 2014 until such time the new rates are adopted and implemented).

Minutes and/or video recordings of these meetings are available here.

The second round of refunds will not begin until after the new water rates are approved. The City will further apprise rate payers on the timing and process for refunds and how the settlement may affect individual residential users. A Frequently Asked Questions page (link below) has been set up to give rate payers additional details and to keep them apprised of the refund process.

In addition, the report of the independent investigation into municipal utility usage has been released by City Council, and is available under in the "documents" section.
